Ms. Netiquette's Advice to Tournament Leagues
Please remember that, while tournaments are allowed on Pogo, they are not officially endorsed or supported by Pogo. They are subject to exactly the same rules and regulations as everyone else.
With this in mind, please note that the following activities violate the Terms of Service on Pogo:
Advertising any kind of product or service in the game rooms. This includes leagues and tournament events. It's acceptable to inform people of your tourney or league ("If you're interested in joining our league or tourney, check out my profile for more information."), but this should be limited to one or two lines in chat. Repetitive messaging and promotional messaging will be treated as a breach of our Terms of Service.
Claiming ownership of a room. In many games, there are "Tournament Rooms" which we strongly encourage leagues to use for their activities. That said, sometimes those rooms are full or they simply don't exist. So, while tournaments are free to play in any rooms, they do not "own" the room, and they cannot ask players to leave a room so that they may conduct their tourney.
Abusive behavior of any kind. This is obvious, of course, but it bears mentioning as a reminder that we're all part of the same community, and those involved in leagues do not receive any special treatment due to their league status.
These activities are considered a clear-cut breach of Pogo's Terms of Service. Leagues and tourney players who violate these terms may also face disciplinary action, such as account suspensions.
Those are the strict rules. Now let's move on to general niceties. There are many ways in which tournament players can show consideration toward fellow Pogo players.
Please be polite, friendly and sensitive to the feelings of other players at all times.
If you are a TD, introduce yourself and explain that you're holding an event. Invite other players to use the 'Mute' button if they don't want the extra 'noise' in the chat window from tourney instructions.
Whenever feasible, please use private chat to conduct tournament business--communicating scores, etc., so as to minimize disruption to chat in the room.
Please remain calm and civil should any conflicts of interests arise. Arguments do very little to resolve anything and all too often end in disciplinary action.
Ms. Netiquette's Advice to Non League Players
If you are in a game room and find that a tournament is disrupting your game, the easiest thing to do is to use the 'Mute' button and carry on. By simply muting the tournament host (usually identifiable by the smiley face icon next to their screen name, or the all-cap type), you can eliminate the vast majority of tournament chat.
Should you witness 'spamming' in the chat window (as described above), please use the 'Report Abuse' button so that appropriate action can be taken to discourage it. However, do note that tournaments do generate a certain amount of extra activity in the chat window for the purposes of coordinating the event. This is acceptable and within Pogo's Terms of Service; flooding chat with advertisements, however, is not.
Ms. Netiquette's Advice to Everyone!
Be friendly and considerate to your fellow players. Whether you are a single player or part of a tournament, we all come to Pogo to relax, enjoy great games and make new friends. Most importantly of all, remember to....
Have FUN! Because that's what Pogo's all about.
