TD FAQ’s

Particularly in your early days as a TD you will have many questions about different things.

We shall try to answer all your potential queries here.

Q:         How do I get to start running tournaments?

A:         Should you not have TD experience in another league then you will be required to undergo training with a Head TD or an Admin.

Q:         Do I have to maintain a set number of tournaments to retain my status?

A:         Yes – you are required to run at least 3 tournaments per week.

Q:         What will happen if I am unable to maintain that rate?

A:         You will be sent an email to advise you that your TD status is in jeopardy and that you are required to reply to that email within 72 hours so that arrangements can be made to reconsider your position.

Q:         What happens if I don’t reply to that email?

A:         Then you will be automatically removed from the role of TD – it is in your interest to reply with all due haste.

Q:         The list of Tournament Directors shows that I’ve been approved but my status shows me as - “IN TRAINING”. How can I change my status?

A:          This status will continue to show if the Head TD or Admin considers that you still need more training after you have conducted your first tournament.

Q:         But what if they don’t consider it necessary?

A:          The Head TD or the Admin that trained you will contact the TD Manager and have your status upgraded to “ACTIVE”.

Q:         How should I name my tournament?

A:          You may name it anything you like as long as it’s within the bounds of common decency.

Q:         What should I put as the location?

A:          Again anything you wish, but usually the room where we play which is All Mixed Up.

Q:         How many rounds do I enter if I don’t know how many players are going to play?

A:          If you always enter 8 in this box Case’s will automatically scale it down to whatever is required.

Q:         And how long do I put between rounds?

A:          15 minutes is a good guide – however some tourneys take longer than others for various reasons.

Q:         What sort of reasons?

A:          They are numerous but chief among them are – the necessity of time clocks, players being booted by Yahoo, players having to reboot etc etc.

Q:         When should I be there to run the tournament?

A:          You should be in the lobby at least 35 minutes before the scheduled start time of you tournament.

Q:         What is the best way to advertise my tournament?

A:          Using a macro program such as Shortkeys, which is about the easiest one to use. Download the free lite version of the .exe program from http://www.shortkeys.com/

Q:         How should I make the advert?

A:          You will need to keep in mind that different people have different screen resolutions and don’t see as much chat as others do; for instance a screen resolution of 640 x 480 only sees six lines of chat but 800 x 600 sees 9; therefore you really need to cater for the group that sees less.

Q:         So what do I do?

A;          make your advert or any other “spam” no more than 3 lines and each line no more than 45 characters (including spaces) long. Examples below:

***********NEXT TOURNAMENT – BANK THE BLACK*****

**************************10 BUX ENTRY*********************

***START TIME MIDNITE EST *****JUMP #112233***

**TO MEET NICE PEOPLE & HAVE GOOD COMPETITION**

Q:         When should I advertise my tournament?

A:          If it’s a randomly created tournament and no others are in progress then you may advertise it immediately you open check in.

If it’s a scheduled tournament and no others are in progress you may advertise immediately and every 5 minutes up until you close check in.

If it’s either of the above and a tournament IS in progress common courtesy decrees that you consult with the other TD and get their permission to advertise yours – especially if your spam is in CAPS.

You are permitted to do small teaser ads for your tournament at any time others agree, but please limit them to small letters, not CAPS – CAPS use is the prerogative of the current TD if a tourney is in progress.

Q:         How can I find out how many players have entered the tournament?

A:          On the Administer Tourney page you have 2 places you can check. One is on the left amongst the Tourney details; the other is via drop down box that shows you who has entered by name.

Q:         I tried that but it still shows the same ones but I know more have entered.

A:          You will need to constantly refresh that page and it will update.

Q:         I have a player that can’t open the tourney page, can I sign them into the tourney?

A:          Short answer is yes, long answer is: THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT ADVISABLE for the reason that they would have to give you their password and this is totally unacceptable for security reasons.

Q:         How do I find out who is playing who?

A:          When the check in for the tournament is closed; on the Administer Tourney page; click on Adjust round #.

Q:         Do I have to tell the lobby who plays who?

A:          It’s not absolutely necessary but some may appreciate it, especially if they have lost the Tourney page and for whatever reason can’t get it back. They will generally ask you if this is the case.

Q:         What is the best way to tell them?

A:          Cut and paste the pairings into your spammer.

Q:         Do I have to visit every table?

A:          Again, this is not necessary but players like to see you are interested and a slight diversion to wish them GL is no biggie and can only enhance your reputation as a caring TD.

Q:         What if a player isn’t there when a game is due to start?

A:          You have a couple of choices here, one is – if it wont hold up the tourney too much you could ask the player waiting to wait a couple of minutes in case of a reboot or – you can put the timer on them immediately, especially if the tourney looks like going overtime.

Q:         How do I do that?

A:          Usually, because the tournament is regulated by US EST then you would announce that you are clocking the player at X hrs US EST.

Q:         How long do I put the clock on a player for?

A:          In a regular tournament game 5 minutes – in the final 10 minutes.

Q:         That’s a pain, why so long?

A:          This is a generally established rule across all leagues and is a courtesy extended to a league member; remember - it may be you that is put on a clock sometime!

Q:         When can I charge an entry fee to play in tournaments?

A:         On completion of ten tournaments.

Q:         How much do I get for running tournaments?

A:         Usually you will get bux at the rate of 1 per player, unless you are a Case’s Premium member.

Q:         How do I put a background on my Tournament page?

A:          On the Administer Tourney page click on CUSTOMIZE TOURNAMENT.  There you will find the complete customising routine (including a colour chart).

Q:         How do I put music on my Tournament page?

A:          Your decision to add music to your tournament page could well be tempered by that fact that some people have dial up connections and it will make the tourney page slower to download. However if you decide to go that way here is the code to enter in - replace the ( with < sign at either end
