A Few Ryder Statistics

I often get questions about the make-up of the league and this prompts me to dig into the statistics to find the answers. I remember someone saying this is an American (USA) league so I did some research and found we actually had more Canadian and other parts of the world than the USA. Today the picture looks a little different. I have tried to answer a few questions here.

What % of Active Members Actually Play?

Although we know we are running some great tournaments with a hefty number of tables you have to question what percentage of our members actually play. When we consider some play every day and some play only occasionally, our average of about 25% isn't bad. What it certainly does is leave room for developing bigger tournaments. You will see on a later chart how we are doing on that.

Where Do People Play In Evening Tournaments?

I am proud to say Ryder is the premier bridge league in MyLeague in the evening. We attribute this partly to our consistency but mostly to the fun, fair and friendly players in our tournaments.

Is Our Member Participation Growing?

I tried to address this question by trending the number of tables at our tournaments. By taking the past tournament records and averaging them for each month I was able to see if there was any indication of a trend. As you can see, even with the dip in the holiday month, the ribbon is reflecting an upward trend. We are definitely moving in the right direction.

How often do people play?

Number of tournaments was determined by dividing the total number of games won/lost by 2 opponents then by 3.3 (avg # rounds in our tournaments). Of the 38 "less than 10", 19 have never played in Ryder.

I am not sure if listing the 6 over 500 shows their dedication to bridge or points out they have nothing better to do but I will list them anyway:

Bern, MJ, Mike, Katie, Ruth and Woody

What's the regional make-up of Ryder?

This is a pretty big swing from 2 years ago when USA and Canada split the league with 46% each. The rest of world made up only 8% back then. Thanks goes to the TDs who were willing to post the afternoon and late night games for the addition of members from across the pond.

To play in our 8:00 games they would need to get up in the middle of the night (or play at work on the night shift - naughty, naughty).

Does Ryder have more men or women?

Looks like another Battle of the Sexes is in order here.

Trouble is, all is not as it seems. Although it appears our community is split, over 65% of our "Under 10" tournaments group are men. They don't play often or they are new. I was hoping for a correlation between this group and the new "World" group but there is none. Most of this group has been inactive for 4 - 6 months.

Removing the group from the pie chart results in the chart below that shows the overwhelming league dominance by our ladies.
